Spatial Updating 1 Allocentric and Egocentric Updating of Spatial Memories

Four experiments investigated spatial updating in a familiar environment. Participants learned locations of objects in a rectangular or a round room from a single stationary viewing position, walked to the center of the layout, and turned to appropriate facing directions before making pointing judgments. Locomotion was visually guided. Participants made judgments of relative direction (e.g., "I...

Updating Human Spatial Memory

Humans have developed different ways to represent spatial information, both in memory and in off-line formats, such as maps and spatial descriptions. These representational systems have developed to deal with environment complexity, the many goals one might have within an environment, and the changes that occur both within the environment and pertaining to how it is used. The present chapter di...

Spatial Updating in Narratives

Across two experiments we investigated spatial updating in environments encoded through narratives. In Experiment 1, in which participants were given visualization instructions to imagine the protagonist’s movement, they formed an initial representation during learning but did not update it during subsequent described movement. In Experiment 2, in which participants were instructed to physicall...

Fairground rides and spatial updating.

A simple experiment with a rotating office chair demonstrates that the extent of counter-rotation we experience when imposed rotation has stopped is the same as the angular inaccuracy of pointing to a previously fixated object. This suggests that our conscious percept of rotation and the updating signal for the egocentric model we use to guide motor actions are closely related.

Sensory Substitution: The Spatial Updating of Auditory Scenes “Mimics” the Spatial Updating of Visual Scenes

Visual-to-auditory sensory substitution is used to convey visual information through audition, and it was initially created to compensate for blindness; it consists of software converting the visual images captured by a video-camera into the equivalent auditory images, or "soundscapes". Here, it was used by blindfolded sighted participants to learn the spatial position of simple shapes depicted...
